Emile - 1890
It was in the summer of 1890 when Emile Nelken, a talented young watchmaker, decided on South East London to be the home of his jewellery shop. At the age of just 24, and supported by his wife Rose, they worked tirelessly to build a successful business. While Emile repaired watches, the running of the shop floor was in Rose’s safe hands. They focused on providing the highest possible standard of services and goods.
Edward – 1943
Emile passed away in 1943, Rose would continue to work, proudly upholding the same traditions and values that had been set out from the beginning. However, she was not alone and now ably assisted by their son Edward. Rose would continue in her dedication to the shop until the age of 96.
Edwin – 1982
The passing of the torch would continue in 1976 when Edwin would take over from his father Edward following his death. 1982 would see a fresh start and a fresh location, with Nelken Jewellers finding its new home in Borehamwood. In October of that year, an unprecedented crowd looked skywards as then TV star Noel Edmonds arrived impressively via helicopter. He would be greeted by a 12 piece band, 3,000 excited residents and Edwin Nelken, proudly holding a giant pair of scissors.
The Present Day
Nelken Jewellers still stands proudly today specialising in the repair and restoration of customer’s precious jewellery. We uphold the traditions that existed over 100 years ago maintaining a friendly, warm atmosphere while still retaining good value and the highest level of service. Edwin happily continues with the help of his daughter Sara. Together they're moving the shop into the modern era with their online presence. In 2022 the TV cameras arrived with two episodes of the BBC’s Eastenders filmed on site.
October 2022 saw us reach a milestone, we celebrated our 40th year anniversary of the opening of the Borehamwood store. We hope to continue this journey for many years to come and would be delighted if you join us.
